The official gang is celebrating our collective 70th birthdays today at a nice place in Richardson and I am happy for each of you who makes it out there. Happy Birthday to each of you and ain't it wonderful to still be alive and well at 70? Every morning Bruce Bratton, my brother Larry and I walked along Prosperity Street (was any street ever so wrongly named?)as we trudged along with a sack lunch in hand toward WW Bushman. We talked big like most boys do. "I am in love with Barbara Knotts," I can hear Bruce say. We fell in love at a young age in those days. "She's smart, pretty and quiet. Just my type." What does a seven year old know about "his type?" "Everybody loves Barbara," I say, trying to not deflate my buddy's ego but also letting him know I am not sharing a pretty blonde with him. As if Barbara Knotts ever knew who either one of us was or would ever know? "You two don't even know what love is. Love! Ha!" says my smart aleck brother who is three years older and a mature young man of the world at nine. "I don't think I will ever live to be 21 years old," I say, changing the subject from love sick blues to life prediction. "Sure you will. You're Mama's favorite," my brother injects as if that has something to do with long life. "I'm Mama's favorite for sure," Bruce brags as usual. "It sure isn't Harriet." Larry and I both spent all our extra time at Bruce's house and knew for sure his Mother preferred her compliant daughter Harriet way over her wayward son. "I just don't see me as an old man," I said, just about the time Mike Crouch joined us. I liked Mike but his house looked too nice to imagine him being one of us. Yard neat. Flowers. Lawn chairs in place. Not too many football games in that yard I surmised. Freckle face Billy Relf joined in from behind as we walked on down Bonnieview. His sister Diane had to stay behind. Girls were not welcome in our group of boytalk. "Twenty one years old is not an old man," Diane, Ms. Smarty, added from behind. We paid her no attention. It seemed old to a six year old carrying a bologna sandwich and potato chips and a twinkie and thinking about eating it before he got to school. It was a good group and we walked together for several years. Diane and Larry went on to junior high and Mike left his nice home and moved away and we never saw him again. Billy didn't see 21 as he gave it up on a hill in Viet Nam. And now we are old men. Made it past 21 by a half century. Hope this life has counted for the Lord somehow. Never amounted to much. Happy 70th to me. Content. Healthy. Living fully today. Looking forward to tomorrow.

I'm sad to tell you that the SOC class of 64 has lost another classmate. Patricia (Pat) Ann Foley Cabiness passed away yesterday, 08-20-2016, from heart disease. She had problems for several years but really struggled over the past two years. Her funeral service will be at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, 08-24-2016, at Lynch Funeral Services in Greenville. Well, let's see now, the class of SOC 1966 is preparing for its big 50 year reunion. I am excited for you all Sandy. Some really great people in that class and I know your reunion will be successful and something to remember for a long time. Meanwhile, back here with us old people (70 year olds) life is all about keeping up with our prescriptions, wondering if we still have the energy to mow the yard in 110 degree weather, watching 16 hours of cable news everyday, and trying to make it for the early bird special most nights. Once you get past that 50th, guys, go ahead and start making plans for getting old. Wills. Living and last. Talking to the kids about what to do with us if we go over the edge. Don't panic when the grand kids get a couple dozen tatoos. Watch those smart phones when you send a text. (I was confused when my younger brother Ernie sent me a text when we were in Seattle that said "sex to all". when I confronted him about such language he said it was supposed to be "say hi to all." Be sure you know which daughter you are texting if you are saying something about the other one. Guilty. And don't be surprised when those grandchildren that were so much fun the last 10-12 years suddenly don't care to be around grampy and mampy anymore. They have moved on and perhaps it's time you did too. Tomorrow my gorgeous spouse and I embark on an adventure with two 12 year old grands. Off to Eureka Springs and then Branson. I think I have the energy, I know I have the want to and I know I do not have the money for such a gig but hey, credit cards still work for old folks too. So here I sit. Seventy years old. Seventy pounds lighter than I was last year. Feeling great even if I do look like a Holocaust survivor. Well, pray for us if you believe in prayer. Laugh at us if you believe in laughter. Cry for us when you remember the last time you took two 12 year olds 500 miles across the south for a week of fun and games. Therefore Sandy, have a great reunion but don't let it end. Make it ongoing. Because old age is out there waiting for you like a crouching tiger. It got me. Obviously.

Very sorry for those of you who have loved ones who have departed this earth in recent days and weeks. Howard. Gail's father in law. Dan Holland. Peaches' mom. Dan Wright. Heartache seems to be a constant companion of where we are in life. My best buddy for the last 40 years (Larry Lee Lewis, a 64 Kimball grad who started at third base for the Knights the same year I started at the same position for SOC) passed away unexpectedly. My next door neighbor, Jim Moreland, a Marine who served in Viet Nam passed away a week later. My heart has grieved so much lately that it is on ready for whoever goes next. Including myself. Seems like a few years ago when I was still working I would occasionally meet an old SOC buddy or friend and we could reminisce for a while and it was like for 30 minutes we were back in the halls on Marsalis Avenue. Ben Patterson in an elevator downtown Dallas. Shelton Mitchell in a diesel garage on South Central Expressway. Paulette Young through her husband, my co worker at the time Eddie Coleman. Stella Taylor in Probate Court. Betty Gibbs in a concession stand at a kids football game in Desoto. Since I retired the chance meetings have come to an end. Our life is now our church. Our kids. Travelling to Navy bases and baseball games. Haven't seen a SOC face from the past since going to TC Freeman's father's funeral a few years back. Seeing Tim and Ron Salter took me back to Bushman when the three of us teamed up for a dozen touchdowns for the school team. Perhaps one day I will meet another of you somewhere. Likely not this side of Heaven. So to each of you, I have enjoyed knowing you all these years. You who ever in your life spoke to me, Thank you. Those of you who claimed me as a friend, a huge thank you to you. Life goes on. Relish it. Cherish your love ones. Be ready for transition from this life to the next one. *Just the ramblings of a confused old man.

Picked up the Waxahachie Daily Light the other day (of which I was editor for a time) and there in the obits was our fellow class member, Danny Wright. Dan passed away about ten days ago and I had already missed his service. Enjoy the day and relish the time you have with your family and loved ones. Life is fleeting. Didn't know Dan too well at SOC but is seems by the obit he had a nice life, ending too soon. God bless your family, old friend, and may each of us find joy in life. BTW, if any of you are coming down this way (Waxahachie) a Kimball grad owns a neat hamburger stand here in town Pop's Old Fashioned Hamburgers and he has it in neat décor and the food is great. Let me know and my wife and I will meet you there. (If you want us to and probably most of you do not. But it's an invitation anyway.)

Former students born prior to 12/31/1957 attending W.W. Bushman Elementary need to contact me. You, your siblings, cousins, aunt or uncles may have attended Bushman (Bonnie View or Linfield address) but not SOC. My neighbors (Scotland Drive), attended SOC before moving from Oak Cliff.
Deceased students name, estimated year of birth or death would be helpful.

BREWER, Charlotte D. A resident of Dedham, MA passed away February 2, 2016. She was born February 27, 1946 in Ennis Texas. She is survived by her loving son, Tyler C. Brewer and his fiance Casey O'Leary of Dedham. Sister Mickey Held of Dallas, Texas, brother Charlie Brewer of Jacksonville, Texas, and brother Billy Brewer of Gainesville Texas. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Helen Brewer, and sister Rita Brewer. Charlotte was a long time executive in retail management at Jordan Marsh, Filenes, G. Fox, and Filenes Basement. Memorial service to be held at Robert J. Lawler and Crosby Funeral Home, 1803 Centre St., WEST ROXBURY, MA on Friday, February 12th at 12 pm.

WHITTINGTON, Dan Gordon Dan Gordon Whittington, retired Dallas Police Detective, lifelong musician and friend to everyone he met, died of a heart attack on Saturday, February 6, 2016. A Dallas native who dedicated his life to serving others, Dan graduated from South Oak Cliff High School in 1964 and briefly studied music education at Howard Payne University before joining the U.S. Marine Corps in 1966. He served as a chaplain's assistant and launch and recovery technician at the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, South Carolina. In 1968, he married the love of his life, Fran, and they settled in Savannah, Georgia. Dan was also making music singing in a church choir and playing in Savannah bars with The Sundowners a folk duo formed in an on-base stairwell with a fellow Marine. Playing several sets a night, he would order two beers on his breaks, drinking one and soaking his guitar-sore fingertips in the other. After his honorable discharge, Dan began his career in law enforcement, working a couple of years with the Savannah Police Department. In 1970, Dan and Fran's only child, Jeff, was born and the young couple decided to move back home to Dallas. Dan signed on with the Dallas Police Department in 1971, beginning a 29-year career that touched countless citizens and colleagues, and included stints in patrol, communications and community policing. For a time he even had an old-school walking beat along Jefferson Boulevard in Oak Cliff. Dan also opened the DPD storefront on North Bishop Avenue in 1986 when there were just a few businesses in what's become the bustling Bishop Arts District; he provided a spark for the revitalization of Oak Cliff by doing his job protecting and helping people. And always, he was making music - writing songs, performing in plays and at weddings and funerals, and combining his love of music with law enforcement by founding the Dallas Police Choir. Dan directed the choir for 14 years, selecting and arranging music for the group and scheduling performances throughout the year. The choir toured Europe, singing at the 50th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France in 1994. Dan spent his last 11 years as a police officer in the internal affairs division, once again serving the citizens of his city and his colleagues on the force with his fairness and dedication to truth and honor. Dan also stayed committed to his various church families over the years. After his retirement in 2000, Dan and Fran joined Faith Lutheran Church in Flower Mound. For many years Dan played in the church band and sang in the choir. He also served on the board of the Faith Lutheran Day School. Most recently, Dan appeared in a number of musicals including "Godspell" and "Annie" at Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church and played standup bass in the Cross Timbers Gospel Bluegrass Band. Dan is survived by his wife of 48 years, Fran Whittington, his son Jeff Whittington, his daughter-in-law Nicole Whittington and his niece Sheri Keith. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 11, at Faith Lutheran Church in Flower Mound. He'll be laid to rest with full military honors at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery at a later date. Donations in Dan's memory may be made to the Faith Lutheran Day School Endowment Fund and the Lewisville Lake Symphony. If you ever met Dan, you were his friend. If you didn't meet him, ask around. You probably know someone who did. -

The memorial service for Dan Whittington is this Thursday,Feb 11, 10:30 am, at Faith Lutheran Church in Flower Mound. The church is located at the corner of Morris Rd and Valley Ridge Blvd.

I'm sad to report that Dan Whittington passed away yesterday. I know no other details. I noted earlier that a part of the soul of our class is gone. We'll all miss him.
