Comments: My seven year old grandson Joey pushed a little boy in the restroom, the boy butted his head on the sink and all heck broke loose. First of all the school considered calling the police. But since the other boy was not bleeding, was conscious, and was quickly laughing it off and wanting to go to class, the school decided all it needed to do was 1. call the boy's parents and make them aware of the assault. 2. call my daughter and make her aware that she was the mother of a certified bully. 3. place my grandson into alternative school for bullies and send him to bully classes for a couple of weeks. 4. await to see if the parents of the other boy wanted to press charges or file a civil lawsuit. Wow. I think back to our days and I remember Ronnie Salter picking up my sandwich and pulling it apart. I remember all of us laughing at Terry Crawford and making sport of him. I recall laughing at Ronnie Stegman and his fance clothes. I remember one of the tough Mankins boys slugging me in the jaw and I felt my head was suddenly on crooked. One time Bob Chaney popped me in the back of my knee when my legs were stiff and I nearly fell and did accidentally have flatulence. Every one had a good laugh on that one. And yet I somewhat grew up normal without bully training for me, Ronnie, Bob or that rascal Mankins. Our education system sure has come a long way. Memories and thoughts. And my grandson learned his lesson and will keep his hands to himself from now on. He is on the watch list.

Comments: I stand corrected, Ecurb. No wonder I thought I was 72 years old on my birthday! Now I feel like a young whipper snapper. Shannon, Darlene and Charlene came to our 35th reunion. I found Charlene in Florida and stayed in touch with her for a while via Classmates.com and Darlene was living in Cedar Hill. Darlene's health was quite bad and I understand she had been ill for a while. BTW, Darlene was still smiling and Charlene still had that furrowed brow, even after all these years. Memories.

Comments:
Gee, haven't seen Darlene and Charlene in ages. And we didn't see you, Steve, at the birthday party. We had a nice time despite the small turnout. So glad folks from other classes joined us for good food and cake. I see Peaches sung "Happy Birthday" to our class - everyone was talking so much I decided it would be too hard to get everyone's attention so we didn't sing. Hope we see more of you at other luncheons and SOC functions.

Comments: What a joy to pick up the Sept. 15 copy of our local newspaper and see the Long Ago section picture. There was a picture of three sets of twins in one family. And standing there, about ten years old, were my sweet girlfriends in elementary school, Darlene and Charlene Wilson. I had to smile seeing Darlene's smiling face under those blond curls and Charlene's frown, which was really a smile but you couldn't tell by the wrinkled brow. Made me think of the letter I found in some of my family memorabilia which I wrote to my parents in 1955. Our teacher had assigned us to write a letter telling our parents about school. My punctuation was not bad for a ten year old but my style was still needing a lot of work. Sentence after sentence was a list of my favorites. Susan Horne was my "favorite" girlfriend and Darlene my favorite dance partner. My favorite arithmetic teacher was Mrs. Files, PE was Mrs. McConnell and homeroom was Mrs. Ploeger. My best friend was Michael Crouch. Which brings up the question of why a person would keep a letter they wrote to their parents 61 years ago? That person needs therapy. Memories.

Comments: Deb and I don't have a bevy of friends like we once did when we were working folk or when we were involved with the young couples at our church and I was the teacher. Since we retired mostly all we see is our family, although most of them live out of state, our few neighbors and the same people in the same aisle at the same church every Sunday morning. Fortunately she and I enjoy each others company almost 24-7. I don't do much writing anymore except an occasional post on the guestbook and maybe a guest column in the newspaper. I have attended the last couple of SOC Mens Lunches in Lancaster that are held quarterly. I enjoyed them. Some of the men seeing my name tag had unique introductions. They had read some of my posts. "You aren't as fat as I pictured you being." one fine fellow told me. "Are you sure you went to SOC?" another. "How come I've never heard of you until now?" "I thought you were in Washington." "Is you wife really as gorgeous as you always say?" I love it. How do you answer questions/ or reply to comments like that? So with that being said, we need to see each other occasionally. Just to stay in touch with our youth. It is a fast fleeing animal and could be completely gone before long. I will be looking forward to seeing you at the Birthday Party next weekend. Send your money in, set the night aside, get a good bottle of wine and sit by my gorgeous spouse and me. We love to share. And I am not as fat as your picture me being. See you.

There were so many Foster kids that we sat on a bench at the dinner table. We took turns doing the dishes and there were so many of us that my turn only came around once a week. We had our own designated piece of chicken. Shirley was the oldest and of course the daughter, so she got the best piece of white meat. Larry got the pulley bone. I was so far down the pecking order that I usually got a thigh, maybe, depending on how hungry Daddy was. If Mom just let us go for it without designation, the moment she sat the chicken dish on the table there would have been five forks stabbing for the breast and someone could have gotten seriously injured. I always enjoyed going over to Bob Chaney's house. Bob started out at Bushman with TC, Ronnie, Mike, Betty, Bruce and me but about the third grade they discovered he was a genius and double promoted him to the fifth grade. Bob was not only a genius and super pianist but he was also an only child, something you didn't see many of in the fifties. He got any piece of chicken he wanted. Occasionally Bob would invite me over to spend the day with him and I would walk around his house wondering why it was so quiet. One Sunday afternoon his parents took me and Bob to the State Fair and I had to be careful going to the fair. I never wanted any of my buddies to know I was afraid to get on roller coasters and any thing that went high or fast. The bumper cars were okay. I had ridden them before so when Bob said let's get on these, I was ready. Mr. Cautious knew if you just turned the wheel and hang on, you can't get hurt. Everything went great until the ride stopped and the man said, Everybody off! So my car stopped and I started climbing out. Just as I stood, Bob shook his car and got a little more juice and hit me head on. I rolled over the hood onto the metal floor and rolled ten feet wondering what the heck had just happened. They checked me out and I was not hurt too badly. It was my last time on the bumper cars but I didn't stay mad at Bob since I still loved going over to his house and getting a good piece of chicken and his Mom mad great pies. Memories.

Steve, That was the first time we were ever given uniforms. Those Vols uniforms were the best thing since my grandmother's fried chicken. Also, I will never forget Phil Harris and his parents. After Phil's death, they treated us like we belonged to them.

Comments: Seeing Little League World Series highlights takes me back to my favorite year of little league baseball. We were twelve years old and the mighty Volunteers, sponsored by the Dallas Fire DepartBment and coached by Mike's father, Jack Livingston. We played all of our game in east Dallas so most afternoons Mr. Livingston picked up me, Bruce Bratton, Tim Freeman and of course had Mike in the car and we were off to play ball. Bruce was a good center fielder, Mike an unbelievable pitcher and hitter (is there anything in sports that kid couldn't do?) and Tim was a stud first baseman. Tim had one of the best knuckle balls I had ever seen and could crush a fast ball. I mostly rode the pine but it didn't matter all that much to me since I just enjoyed being on a team. My Dad once told me to either be a starter or I should quit but I wouldn't do it. During the season our shortstop was struck in the head by a thrown pitch and died from internal bleeding during the night. We were pallbearers. A few of us later in the season camped out all night and talked about girls and tried to scare the wits out of each other with goofy scary stories. On opening day we all got to ride on the ladder on top of a real fire truck during the parade and that was cool. I had a lot of fun that season and even got to pitch one game. It was the only game my grandfather Foster ever came to. Memories.

His mother is 97 and has many injuries plus the grieving she will be going through losing a son. Danny's sister in law was also in the car. They were on the way to eat. His brother was going through a 4 way stop when all of a sudden a car came out of no where going very fast and hit them.

Comments: Steve and Betty, I know several people who have homes in Waxahachie and drive into Dallas to work. Most of them are professors at SMU. I remember I used to talk to Warren Culbertson on the SMU campus, when he was a part-time instructor. Later, I saw his home in Waxahachie. It was a beautiful old home with an impressive front porch. He had what appeared to be a weather vane on the porch, which resembled a big clock.

Comments: Kathleen, Deb and I were leasing a home on University in the early 80's when our home was being built. Of course University is the street that runs into Southwestern Assemblies of God University (former Trinity University, now located in San Antonio). We were taking a walk one cool evening when we passed a cottage style brick home with a big oak tree in the front yard. The owner was out and we stopped to say hello. The owner said her house was once owned by two school teachers who were sisters and taught in the Dallas schools. One of those sisters was Ms. Plummer, who indeed was my wonderful Latin teacher at SOC. I thought is so cool that I was living just doors down from where she lived so many years. I wrote a newspaper column about that event and got several good remarks from it. Deb and I have lived here a total of 26 years now in three different homes. The one on University, the home we built out in the country and raised three of our children there and eventually sold it in 2009, and now an old historic home just west of downtown. I guess we will just call this town home. Seems we can't leave. Memories.

Comments: Steve, I don't know very much about the history of Waxahacie. I do remember that we used to stop at an old fashioned Texaco on our way to Killeen in the fifties. This Texaco station was the fanciest filling station you have ever seen. It curved around it's part of the block and was built in the Southwestern style. I remember the ice cream was great. We had to drive to Killeen before car air conditioning and it took several hours to get there. I always looked forward to stopping at this oasis along the old Dallas highway, which could have been a Norman Rockwall painting. I remember Ms. Plumber, my Latin teacher at SOC, used to drive in every day from Waxahachie and frequently mentioned Waxahachie in class.

Comments: The Rogers Hotel has been restored, Kathleen. We enjoyed coffee in the lobby and a tour of a Music Museum that is there. Two of the floors are offices and the top floor is residential lofts. There is a restaurant called the 1879 Chisholm Trail (the original 1879 Townhouse Restaurant burned earlier this year) is quite good and reasonable. Deb and I live just off the square so we walk around downtown for our morning exercise. Yesterday we drifted into the College Street Pub for dinner and was very pleased and had a good time. Fried green tomatoes! We have loved the Rogers for years and were happy when it was restored. In 1919 the Cincinnati Redlegs major league baseball team stayed there during spring training. I don't know how long we are back in Waxahachie for but we are enjoying being back.....for now. Still missing the harbor lights of Whidby Island. You can share your historical knowledge of this area with me anytime. I love the history. Take care, Steve

Comments: Steve, I didn't know the old Rogers Hotel had reopened. How was the food? The Rogers Family are related to us on my father's side of the family. It used to be a beautiful hotel with lots of mahogany. The SOC men's luncheon certainly attracts a big group.

Comments: Attended the SOC men's lunch yesterday in Lancaster. Maybe 60 guys there from classes ranging from 1958-1964. I have attended a couple of these and they are enjoyable meeting other retired men who shared the halls on Marsalis. I sat with a man wearing a Clara Oliver tee shirt and I thought that was cool. His name is Phil Roden and he was Class of 63. And then this morning Deb and I walked downtown to the old Rogers Hotel and had coffee. Met and visited with a fellow who attended Adamson and Kimball and had on a ball cap with "Oak Cliff" written on it. We had a good visit, talking over the old days of Oak Cliff and the waitress over heard us and she asked me if I knew her cousin at SOC, Larry Burdine? Of course I knew Larry and we had a good time talking. It's always a pleasure to meet people who remember the old days. Memories.

I received a little more information on Jimmy Lemmon. They will have his services Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church in Cisco, Texas (near Abilene), as the women of the church wanted to provide a meal for the family, then afterwards they will spread his ashes. Michael Lemmon did not give a specific time, but I am sure the church would know. If I hear any further info, I will pass it on.

I received this note from Michael Lemmon, Jimmy Lemmon's brother: Tanya, he died Tuesday morning. He slipped and fell in the night, hit his head and died before paramedics got there. As for as a service, he is being cremated and we will hold a memorial service in a couple of weeks. Some family memebrs are out of town. Thanks for your thoughts. I will update you when I know the details.

Comments: A note on facebook today said that Jimmy Lemmon has passed away. I have contacted Jim Bailey, Fred Williams and Shannon to help me find information for all of us. We had lost touch with Jimmy the last few years. It is always so very sad when we hear we've lost another classmate. If anyone knows anything, please do share it here. Thanks.
I hope you're all doing well. Much love.

Comments: Love the family history, Shannon. About ten years ago I asked my Mom for as much information about her family and Dad's family as she could come up with. After weeks and after letters to her surviving sibling and Dad's surviving sibling, I came up with their own parents names and that's it. No one even knew their own grandparents complete names or places of birth. Good grief. I felt like I must have just landed here one day and called myself Foster. So I began to work in my spare time on getting together family history. In time I have found about three cousins, some second and third removed cousins, who cared enough to try and find out who they are as well. Today I have a family book that has about four generations of Fosters, several generations of Whitakers including Civil War veterans, and at least four generations of my father's mother and my mother's mother and their people. It has been exhausting and costly but at least I have something to pass on to some of my kids and grandkids. Amazingly, I took my book to a family reunion in June and no one was interested in looking at it! Most people just don't really care about family history. Keep those records and pass them on. Take care and see you at the birthday party, Steve

Hi, Steve. Sorry it took so long to respond. The family names of my folks buried at City Cemetery are "Myers" and "Park". There's an old pecan tree in the area. From the little "road" that goes past the burial area is a large double headstone of Arthur Myers and his wife, Prue. "Bobbie" was Uncle Arthur's nickname and "Prue" was his wife's nickname (I can't at this moment remember the full spelling of her name). "Bobbie" and "Prue" are also prominently carved on the headstone. Other names are Mattie Park Myers Allen (my grandmother), Cassie Amanda Park Myers (my great-grandmother), Hardy Holt Myers (who was very young when he died), Samual Park, and assorted others. Some of the graves face west and others face east.

07/21/11
Comments: Yes, Shannon, that is the City Cemetery. Very large and well maintained cemetery with many monuments. Sits at the end of Hawkins Street (see the Hawkins Mansion built in 1872) about four blocks from our house on Main Street. We live in a house built in 1915 which is about the year I was born I think. What is your family name and I will be looking for your people? Take care and hope to see you at the Birthday Party. Deb and I will be celebrating our 33rd anniversary at the same time.

07/19/11
Comments:
Steve, is the Waxahachie Cemetery the same as the City Cemetery? Several family members on my mother's side are buried in the City Cemetery, including my grandmother. My grandfather is buried in Mills Cemetery in Garland, but we always knew grandmother wanted to be "with her people", so when she passed, we knew she'd be happiest if laid to rest in Waxahachie.
