For those of you coming to the SOC luncheon on Saturday, if you can find your name tag from a reunion, please consider wearing it. Kinda nice to see the face of the person we went to school with so we are more assured of who we are talking to in some cases. Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible. Looks like we have a potential for 60 plus people at El Fenix Downtown Dallas. Never too late to come and all are welcome. 11:30 am.

Linda, thank you for the note on your mom. I think we, too often, view our parents as just Mom and Dad, when they loved, played, and hurt just like we do. Many of them actually lead exciting or unique lives. We didn't see that because to us they were just Mom and Dad. I would never have dreamed that your mom would have been a dancing waitress. I would have just thought of her as the mom in your house that took care of everyone. Many interesting biographies to be told, I would think.

Comments: Loved your tribute to your mother, Linda. What powerful words of praise, joy, love and such a send off. "I'll Fly Away" takes me back to my childhood and my Aunt Poll and Uncle Dugan singing it at church. Tears flowed down my cheeks as I read your story. Reminds me of three years ago next month when I held the head of my sweet Mom as she took her last breath before taking flight. Please write more about this wonderful woman and her life. You write from your heart extremely well. Someone asked me recently " o you believe in the after life?". I answered. No. I believe I live in the Pre-life right now. Heaven is LIFE!! God bless you and your family.Steve

My 91 yr old mother, Leona Christine Wright, passed away Easter Sunday April 24th at 1pm. She was in a nursing home on hospice. The hospice nurse had just said that she did not expect my mother to pass away for several more days. I arrived and played mother's favorite Loretta Lynn gospel songs for her. I told her that we loved her and that we would be fine. She passed away when her favorite song "I'll Fly Away" was playing. The funeral will be graveside at Grove Hill in Dallas on Friday, April 29th, 2pm. The family is requesting that anyone attending please wear red, mother's favorite color. She dyed her hair red until her 90th birthday. During the early 50's mother was the head waitress at the Bob Wells Ranch House. She wore a white cowgirl outfit and lead her waitresses in a little dance at the start of the show. After BWRH closed, she worked other nightclubs. She once worked 3 days for Jack Ruby and quit because she did not like him. Imagine her surprise when she saw him kill Oswald live on TV. She walked the aisle for Billy Graham and eventally owned 2 cafes.

Bruce, memories...earning a few bucks as a kid was awesome. When I was going to Lisbon in the 5th grade I got a job shining shoes at Hayles barber shop. Worked Friday after school and Saturdays earning 25 cents to shine a pair of shoes. I was rich with 2 or 3 dollars on Sunday. My mother taught me a new word tithes. 10 per cent of my earnings. I didn't really think the church needed my quarter or so but I would fill out the envelope and deposit my tithes. I felt like a big contributor to the church...Heck my tithes would have bought a hamburger at Holland's hamburger stand on Ann Arbor. 20 cents for a hamburger and a nickel for a coke.

The Elders used to live on that big hill on Kiest right before Bonnie View. One year I was at Jame's house when it was snowy/icey and we helped push cars up that hill. Some folks actually gave us money for helping. I think I went home with about $8 or $9. Man, I was rich.

Comments: Algebra can cause a person who lacks understanding thereof to do strange things. Such as wonder what the heck it is any good for? Or why a reasonably intelligent person such as oneself cannot grasp the theory? Sitting in Coach Tom Kelly's 8th grade Algebra class in the middle of a big test, I felt confident I could pass. I did not feel like I had an "A" in there anywhere but was sure I had enough knowledge to maybe get a B. Earl Foster didn't expect A's out of his ragnots but he sure expected a passing grade. Sometime during about half way through the test I remember being tapped on the shoulder. What the hey? I looked back in response. Ken Cochran was actually asking me a question about the test with Coach Kelly sitting less than twenty feet away! James Elder overheard us and looked around. About that time Kelly looked up. Busted. He took the three of us out of the room and gave us a good coach's (which tops a teacher's anyday) chewing. Being ballplayers we all got the paddle. Ouch. Ken and Elder were cool. However, Foster was always a bit of a softy and I'm on the brink of tears. An 8th grader tearing up? Nearly.I learned a few things that day. One: Coach Kelly was no longer a favorite coach. Two: Math might not be my major in college. Third: James Elder was one cool cat under fire. And last: to never sit in front of Ken Cochran again. Memories.

Comments: Skip, don't take it personal that I have neglected responding to you on your business venture. I truly admire your enthusiasm and honesty and hope that your venture is all that you imagine it can be and more. I can't speak for others on the site as I know at least a dozen contributors on this site who do quite well financially. If you asked each of us individually we would probably each answer we don't have enough for retirement but I have spoken with millionaires in their eighties who still worry about running out of money before they depart. I kind of think it's all in the perspective of the person. Personally I just don't have the time or the desire to reenter the business game. Or the energy. I love life and have a very miniscule nest egg that I am going to try and nurture until I depart. And it helps some that I am blessed with successful children. They take care of their old man very lovingly and I so appreciate their help. My gorgeous spouse and I will go on just they way we are. Nearly broke but incredibly blessed. Our time from here on out goes to Jesus Christ. Our kids. Our grands. Each other and the open road. Thanks for the opportunity. You always were an exuberant, friendly, incredibly talented guy and I see you the same way today. God bless you my lifelong friend, Steve.

I remember those baseball cards or it could have been one or two of a deck of cards that I used to clip onto the spokes of my bicycle to give it that loud sound of a motorcycle as I rode the bike down the hill on my block, (of course to get the boys attention), in doing so I accidentally kept going when I should have stopped, hit a tree and well I sure did not make into the neighborhood club that day. The next week they dared me to get into a huge tire and be rolled down the hill, let me tell you that was fun but I could not walk straight for two days!

Trying to remember how we played baseball using the stats on the back of those baseball cards. You are correct, Steve, we really did have some very special cards in those days. We just didn't understand how valuable an original Duke Snyder would be worth. And, wondering whatever happened to Ike Delock. Hours of enjoyment using the fabulous technology of those days, cardboard and colored ink.

Comments: Scattershooting while wondering how wealthy we would be Bruce Monroe Bratton if we had saved some of those thousands of baseball cards we use to trade......why Ronnie Stegman always wore Sunday slacks instead of jeans like the rest of us.....where Timothy Freeman would be is he had been allowed to pitch in little league with that wicked knuckleball.....how many millions that geek Russell Rousch made in the computer business......who killed that thug Perry Williams, bully of the 9th grade at Holmes (He knocked me out into a locker one time in the 7th grade because I happened to be in his line of fire).....why I never proposed to Suzan Horne when I obviously loved her the first six years of my school life.....how Nanette Siebenhausen ever learned to spell her name with 50 letters!......if Judy Walker Crouch is still as full of energy at 65 as she was at 64.......what Meals on Wheels will bring me and Deb for lunch today.......

Comments: Sorry, guestbook, I have another thought. Must put it down or it could be long gone by morning. Found a picture from our 25th reunion and there was a group of Bushman grads and hiding ride behind the effervescent DeDe Cole was my long long friend, the late Dickie Tatum. Did not remember the picture and very sorry I didn't remember visiting with Dickie. Love to come across old pictures in my attic that brings back thoughts of people and places. Today I found one of the WW Bushman choir. Taking a scope to enlarge the picture I was able to scan down the line and see a smiley Betty Gibbs, a stoic Bob Chaney, and you Ms. Linda Fry Hartley, as pretty a kid and as smart as they came. I recall you were a real challenge to me in the spelling bees. Mike Walker, smiling into the camera as though he really could sing, Patricia Lilly, giggling as usual. Memories.

Comments: Susan, your inquiry about Tommy Windham brings back pleasant thoughts from years ago at OW Holmes. Tommy "Gopher" Windham had a special place in my heart. Many afternoons I would stop by his house after school just around the corner from our beautiful school. Tommy's mother was a great baker (as was mine) and many an afternoon we ripped into a cake or pastry she had prepared. My favorite was her Queen Elizabeth Cake with nuts and coconut and cheeries, good grief I can gain pounds just thinking about it. Tommy's brother Michael was an attorney and when he sold his 1959 Chevy my Dad bought it for me for my junior and senior years at SOC. Gopher (who was given that awful moniker by one of the goofy coach-teachers) and I wrote a play that we worked hard on and hoped to get it produced one day. Never hurts for a kid to dream. Last time I remember seeing Tommy was the 25th reunion and seems he was living in Oklahoma and also seems he had a new baby and yes we were in our mid forties during those days so I gave him a little good natured ribbing. Of course the youngest of my five was only seven years old back at home. About all I can tell you about Tommy. Great guy. Memories.

Hello Fred, good to hear from you again. I agree too many friends have left us for what Sis Hibbard refer ed to as a promotion to a higher life...The mentioning of James Poston gives me the image of James (didn't know him as Jimmy) smiling. I don't remember seeing him without his smile. I bet that makes for a great business man greeting customers with his smile

03/25/11
Comments: Long before he became James Poston, one of three monster linebackers for the Bushman Pirates and later Zumwalt and SOC fame, he was just Jimmy Poston, a little kid from the farm. He sounded like Andy Griffith and probably wore cowboy boots to school, although I don't remember all that much about shoes from that era. He wore plaid shirts when they weren't cool. He wasn't very big in stature but as he proved later on when he donned football pads, you don't necessarily have to be big to be tough. One day in first grade we were winding down a school year and Ms. Bush allowed us a few days of having a little fun. She encouraged us one day to put on a talent show. What's cool about being seven years old is that you haven't developed all the self consciousness that will cause shyness as you get older. Our wonderful teacher gave us the chance to sing for our talent. I knew several songs but the one that came to mind was Harry Belafonte's "Hey mister Tally man, tally me banana, daylight come and me want to go home." After a few minutes of pure misery the teacher mercifully cut me off and did the class a huge favor. Then Jimmy got up and cut loose with Big Bad John by Jimmy Dean. He blew me away, knowing all the lyrics and even hitting the deep notes. If you go by his feed store perhaps James will do a few lines from his one hit wonder music career. Memories.

Today was the first time that I have checked in on the Guest Book in ages. Steve Foster, it was a delight to read your comments. You always had a way to touch our hearts with your writers talent. Skip Benson, it was also great to read your comments. Skip, when I saw your name, I immediately thought of the days when we competed in "Shot Put" together. Good to see you are still kick'n about. Mike Collins, I have to agree with the others, Bill Cosby's, Understanding Southern, was absolutely the funniest video I have seen in sometime. Always good to see your input. We have to get together soon to talk about our Gospel Lighthouse Days. I have been to too many funerals of our Lighthouse friends of late. Guys, thanks for all the wonderful memories you share.
